Save Our Bluths

I was really impressed with tonight’s episode of Arrested Development. The latest chatter I heard was that Fox was not going to pick it up for another season. However, it may not yet be officially cancelled. There is a grassroots campaign to pester Fox into keeping it on the air… But tonight’s episode shaped the show into a metaphor for its own fate.

In the show, the family’s father (Grandfather is probably the best way to refer to him) has almost destroyed (through criminal dealings with Iraq) the company which keeps his completely unstable family living in the lap of luxury. The family is struggling to stay together and keep the family business alive (and it’s much, much funnier than I’m making it sound). In tonight’s episode, the family decides to throw a fundraiser for a retainer fee ($1,000) for the family’s new lawyer.

In real life, SaveOurBluths.com is raising $1,000 to send customized banana stress toys to the executives at Fox.

There is a great line in the show where the grandfather says something like, “I don’t think the Home Builders Organization is going to help us.” The son replies, “No, HBO doesn’t want us.” “Well, then it’s showtime. I mean, we’ll have a show and dinner at the fundraiser.” And, of course, in real life they are in talks with Showtime to pick up the show.

In the episode, they made multiple attempts to make it a show everyone could watch and they pointed it out when they did it. It made the show a little disjointed, but very funny. They are the current king of edgy humor, and they definitely showed their chops tonight.

So, like a good fan, I’m telling my friends. You need to watch this show. They make a lot of self-referencing jokes and they keep a good bunch of laughs which build over a number of episodes, so make sure you watch at least a couple of episodes (at least 4 more new ones left) so you can get the rhythm of it. There is no laugh track, so you are going to have to be smart enough to figure out when to laugh without any help. Call me up if you’re unsure.
