Am I Excited About Serenity?

Am I Excited About Serenity? by globalreset.

Yes! Yes, I am! So excited, in fact, that I bought a Captain Malcolm Reynolds doll! (I know I am supposed to say action figure, but come on… It’s a doll.) I like having a few dorky desk toys to lighten up my work place. Might as well have a desk toy of my favorite anti-hero.

This is a big weekend for me… The release of Serenity and the celebration of my birth are both on Friday, followed up by my Wedding Anniversary on Sunday.

Now I know some of you did not watch Firefly while it was on Fox, so they cancelled it. I have noone to blame but you for this injustice. Now Paramount has decided to give you a second chance, and if you don’t watch it this time, I will never forgive you. Wikipedia has a lot of information on the original show, which you completely destroyed.

iPod Vending Machine

Posted by Scott Hughes Fri, 23 Sep 2005 17:09:00 GMT

iPod Vending Machine by globalreset.

When flying back to Texas from Pennsylvania last weekend, Nicole and I had a layover in Atlanta. While waiting on our plane, we noticed this vending machine tucked away beside the regular shops. It can dispense an iPod Mini, iPod Shuffle, or any of the various iPod accessories. Also, if you made it to the airport with your PowerBook, but forget your wireless card, you can purchase an AirPort card from the machine.

Typically, when one is faced with such a huge convenience (especially in an airport), one would expect a significant markup. I was surprised to find that each item was at the regular retail price, same as if you ordered it from Apple.com or bought it at an Apple retail store.

But here’s a thought… If I go ahead and drop $200 on an iPod mini at the airport, what am I going to do with it? It doesn’t come preloaded with songs. I mean, other luxuries at the airport like the portable DVD-player rental places at least give you the player and some movies. I suppose the only scenario in which this is terribly useful is if your grandparents are flying out for your graduation and they waited until they got to the airport to find a present for you… But will your grandparents want to buy something from a kiosk?

Biker Dad tries E-Meter

Biker Dad tries E-Meter by globalreset.

Snapped this shot at the Texas State Fair. That’s a biker dad trying out the E-Meter with the guidance of a local Scientologist. They believe that a skilled reader of the instrument can pinpoint the exact facets of your life in which you are not realizing your full potential. If you google for the device, you can find a funny promo shot of John Travolta holding the magic tin cans.

Flickr blogging

Flickr blogging by globalreset.

I already set up flickr to accept emailed photos from my sidekick under my “moblog” tag. I tried it out yesterday with a pic of a crazy looking MegaMan print on the side of a hoopty…

Today, I am testing with an auto-blog feature. So this post should go straight to the blog. We will see how it works.

This picture was taken at a mediterranean restaurant near my office. It made me very sad for my culture when I saw it. I can’t believe the restaurant owner actually brings this lady in to read tarot for his customers… Further, I can’t believe his customers appreciate this service…. Sad, sad, sad…

Damn leaky roof

You’d think that given the high cost of rent we pay for the posh downtown apartment we’re in, we wouldn’t have to deal with crap like this. It’s leaked since we moved in, but it really only drops any water if there is a horrendous storm outside… Which, thankfully, is rare in Dallas. We’ve made complaints to the management multiple times, but no action has been taken. I assume that either they don’t want to re-shingle the roof since they did it right as we moved in about 2 years ago or they are waiting for us to move out to dig out the root of the problem.

And as much as I’d rather continue renting in downtown than move out to a house in the suburbs, crap like this really makes home ownership a no-brainer. I mean, sure, if you own a house problems like these are your own to deal with… But in my current situation, nobody is dealing with it.

Evolution of Coffee

Posted by shughes Thu, 16 Jun 2005 03:20:08 GMT

Evolution of Coffee Originally uploaded by globalreset.

The future of coffee is here, and it’s bit more bland than I expected.

I really enjoy the taste of the coffee I get out of my French Press, especially if I’m using fresh beans. I’m not pretentious enough to actually have a favorite bean or anything. But the only downside to the French Press is the clean up afterwards. It takes a lot of scrubbing to get those coffee grounds out of every crevice it’s filter creates. On a weekend morning, though, it’s quite worth the extra effort.

Then there’s the pod coffee maker. It’s hard to beat the convenience of this thing. You just drop a tiny “pod” of coffee, already wrapped in its own filter, into this thing and tell it to brew 1 or 2 cups of joe. It doesn’t taste as good as the French Press, but it’s faster and easier to clean. The advent of the pre-flavored pods with some flavored creamer offsets the blandness of the coffee flavor a bit. It’s really excellent if I decide to have a quick cup with my breakfast before work.

Now, my latest discovery, is the self-heating canned coffee. So far, I’ve only tried the French Vanilla latte flavor… And it is quite bland. Too much milk for my tastes. But how in the hell can you beat this product in the convenience department? You pull a can lid off the bottom, pop a plastic container to create a chemical reaction, and wait 5 minutes… And it’s literally too hot for me to drink. I picked up a 4-pack for $4, so it’s a bargain compared to other “on-the-run” coffee solutions (like Starbucks).

The self-heating can is designed by a California company called OnTech. It apparently took them 7 years and $24 million to perfect the design. Presumably, more products will follow and, hopefully, these products will taste better. I can see oatmeal, soup, hot cocoa, and even melted chocolate for dipping being quite a success.

Flickr Test

Posted by shughes Tue, 03 May 2005 03:10:42 GMT

I’m slow to the gate here, just now getting around to playing with Flickr. After posting this pic, I tried using their “blog it” tool… Which is how it ended up here. I love how you can annotate different sections of the picture with notes. Also, like delicious it lets me tag my photos. My OCD makes me enjoy tagging things.
